Epoxy Template Boards Explained: Specs, Thicknesses and When to Use Them

Fiberglass epoxy board for garment templates: available thicknesses from 0.3 to 3mm, water-green vs yellow grades, cutting requirements and best-fit applications.

PVC gets a template room started; epoxy board is what it graduates to. When templates run on high-speed automatic machines, live next to heat, or must stay stiff at thicknesses PVC cannot hold, glass-epoxy laminate is the answer. What the material actually is

Epoxy template board is fiberglass-reinforced epoxy laminate: layers of woven glass cloth saturated in epoxy resin and cured under heat and pressure into a rigid sheet. It is the same laminate family used in electrical insulation, which is why template stock comes in the familiar water-green and yellow colors rather than the transparent look of PVC.

The glass reinforcement is the point. It gives the sheet a stiffness-to-thickness ratio far beyond unreinforced plastics, excellent dimensional stability across humidity and temperature swings, and a groove edge that resists abrasion from thread and needle contact for far longer than PVC.

Specs that matter when ordering

Thickness range. Template stock runs 0.3 / 0.5 / 1.0 / 1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0 mm. The thin end is the unique capability: a 0.3–0.5 mm epoxy layer is genuinely stiff, where PVC that thin is floppy film. This enables low-profile top layers and inserts that keep total template height down — valuable under machine heads with tight clearance.

Sheet formats. Water-green stock commonly comes around 1020 × 1220 mm; yellow stock in 1000 × 1000 and 1000 × 2000 mm. When quoting, nest your typical template outlines against both formats — the right sheet size cuts real waste. Full availability is on the epoxy template boards page.

Surface. The laminate bonds well with the same double-sided cloth tapes used on PVC; no special adhesives needed for standard builds.

Where epoxy earns its cost

Four situations decide for epoxy: automatic template sewing (at machine speeds, template flex causes skipped stitches and needle strikes — epoxy bases keep large templates dead flat); long-running styles (groove wear is the usual end of a PVC template’s life, and epoxy grooves survive several times longer — for a staple style, one epoxy template can outlast a series of PVC rebuilds); heat exposure (near fusing stations or laser-equipped heads, PVC softens, epoxy does not); and thin-but-stiff layers (the 0.3–0.5 mm capability PVC simply lacks).

The standard hybrid build deserves repeating: epoxy base + transparent PVC top flap — stiffness and wear life below, operator visibility above, joined with ordinary cloth tape. Down-jacket quilting frames are the canonical all-epoxy case; see the down jacket template solution.

Cutting epoxy: the two rules

Same CNC machine, different discipline. First, corn-teeth bits, not single-flute — glass fiber shreds a single-flute edge quickly and the frayed groove that results chews sewing thread; the many-small-teeth corn pattern shears fibers cleanly and spreads the abrasive wear. Second, slow down and extract dust — epoxy cuts slower than PVC, forcing feed chips edges and snaps small bits, and glass dust is abrasive to machine ways and unpleasant to breathe. Ordering guidance

Epoxy is a per-template decision, not a room-wide default: most rooms stock a modest quantity — a few sheets each of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mm covers bases, thin layers and heavy frames — alongside their PVC majority, and reorder with the regular consolidated shipment. Freight note: epoxy sheets ship flat-packed like PVC and consolidate in the same cases.

What is epoxy template board made of?

What thicknesses are available for template work?

Both are glass-epoxy laminates suitable for templates; they differ in sheet format and supplier grade more than in function. Choose by the sheet size that nests your templates most efficiently.

Can epoxy board be cut on a normal template cutting machine?

Yes — same CNC machine, different tooling: corn-teeth router bits instead of single-flute, slower feed rates, and dust extraction because glass-fiber dust is abrasive.
