Fabric has two ways to defeat a template: it can creep while the needle runs, and it can be loaded wrong before the needle starts. The template’s anti-slip system answers both — with two different consumables that beginners often confuse. Here is how sandpaper and foam divide the work, and how to spec each.
Sandpaper grip strips: against creep
What they are: adhesive-backed abrasive strips — 5, 6, 8 or 10 mm wide, 280 mm long, boxed by the 500–1000 — applied to the template’s fabric-contact faces along both sides of the stitching groove.
The job: once the template closes, thousands of grit points bite the fabric surface so it cannot migrate under needle impact and foot drag. Creep is the mechanism behind puckered seams and drifting topstitch on template work; grip strips are the cure, and they are the single highest-impact consumable in the room.
Placement rules: parallel to the groove on both sides, close without intruding into needle clearance; narrow strips follow tight curves, wide strips cover straight runs with fewer pieces. On slick shells (down jacket nylon, coated fabrics) double the coverage — this is also where ribbed anti-slip template pins join the fight.

Foam edge strips: against wrong loading
What they are: adhesive-backed foam strips, 1–5 mm thick, in 1 m lengths and 28 cm shorts, plus 50 × 50 cm foam blocks for cutting custom shapes.
The job: they build the fences — soft raised edges the operator pushes the panel against when loading. Good fences make correct placement the path of least resistance: the panel drops in, meets foam on two sides, done. That turns loading from a judgment call into a motion — which is exactly what lets a new operator match a veteran’s output.
Thickness rule: match the fabric. Light shirting registers against 1–2 mm; denim and padded panels need 3–5 mm to feel the stop. Too thin and edges override the fence; too thick and the foam shadows the seam area and slows unloading.

Why “either/or” is the wrong question
The two are stages of the same defense: foam positions, sandpaper holds. A template with grip but no fences loads slowly and inconsistently; fences without grip loads beautifully and then puckers. Stocking and reorder
Both are true consumables that wear invisibly — the signal is functional (creep returns; fences compress flat), noticed by operators before it is seen by supervisors. The working pattern: keep one unopened box of each width/thickness in floor stock, log replacement per template rebuild, and reorder quarterly with the sheet shipment — strips ride essentially free on sheet freight.
